Heat/Moisture Exchanger (HME)

The Z1™ Heat Moisture Exchange (HME) is an inline humidification solution unit for use with the Z1 & Z2. It is a waterless humidification that requires no additional power and takes up very little space. A great alternative to large humidifiers.

Simply attach the HME between your mask and your standard CPAP or BiPAP tubing. After that, turn on your machine and experience a steady flow of humidified sleep therapy air. HME Filters should be changed about once a week for best results.

When using your CPAP or BiPAP the HME Filter captures heat and moisture from the air as you exhale. It then returns heat and moisture to the breathing circuit with each inhalation creating a comfortable, effective and convenient humidified breathing system.

Usage

To install a Heat Moisture Exchanger for therapeutic use, connect the large diameter end of the HME to your mask and the smaller diameter end to your CPAP tube. Be sure both connections are full seated and secure. Your HME is now ready for use.

Replacing HME’s

Heat Moisture Exchangers should be changed as needed when humidification levels appear to drop – usually about once a week with proper storage and nightly use. When not in use HMEs should be stored in a sealed plastic bag (i.e. a ZipLock). The HME will immediately begin to collect moisture and humidity when exposed to air. (Note: In-Line HME packaging originally recommended replacement of the HME on a daily basis; however weekly changes have been found to be more effective and the packaging is being updated to reflect this.)

Works Great In Mountains

I have to admit I had my doubts I would get enough moisture from this but I used it for first time in the Mountains for 4 nights at 9,300ft elevation and I did not have dry nasal passages which often lead to burning nose, congestion, and even bleeding when blowing nose. Very pleased! My cousin is a respiratory therapist and he said this technology is used in hospital based equipment for a long time. Impressive.

HMEFirst time use

I used this with my mini CPAP for the first time in Cuba this past week. It worked perfectly and helped quiet my mini CPAP. I will bring a supply when I travel to Europe 40 days this summer.

Purchased a Cpap for travel

I purchased a travel Cpap. I didn't want to travel with distilled water or have to look for it when I got to my destination. This was a solution.

New thing for me

I wanted a Cpap that I could travel with. Without the need to find distilled water. Light and packable. I found this one to be in my price range. The machine is quite but the air relief is a little noise. I have not put it to an all night test yet but will before I take it on the road.

Cool little item

I ordered them one day and the next they were delivered...what's better than that? Great for traveling as they can be thrown in the carry pack and take up no room. Compared to a humidifier that's larger than the travel CPAP unit, these are great.

Love this product

Both my wife and I use it with our BIPAPs.

Love the fact that we no longer have to bother filling the humidifier every night.

Also makes it easier for traveling.

Works with some adjustments

This is a follow up on another review I did recently on the Z1 Auto machine.

HME's replace water humidifiers by capturing the moisture from your own breathe and puts it back in when you breathe in. HME's have been around for a long time. Seen studies where HME's verses water humidifiers work about the same. It varies by each individual. HME's have to be installed as close to the mask as possible to work. More on this later.

HME's are perfect for traveling. Much smaller without the large water reservoir. Main drawback is price. HME's can last about 7 days and cost about $5 each. Distilled water is less than a $1 a gallon and can last 2 weeks.

I use a full face mask and this model has a specialized hose. I can install the HME in the hose, but almost mid way down the length of the hose, Doesn't work well this far from the mask. The Z1 Auto website said their HME is compatible with my mask, but it really isn't/

Talk to customer support and they said they were working on a solution. I came up with one while talking to them. I had a spare hose for my mask and cut off the hose and was left with two ends. Tried a few different connectors, sprinkler pipes. PVC pipes, etc. Finally found a plastic hose connector that I was able to grind down to fit the hose ends. Nice tight fit and now the HME is within a couple of inches from the mask. Cost me a whole $2.50 to make this mod.

Anyways, the HME worked well on a recent trip. Can't tell any difference between using a water humidifier versus the HME. Now if only they could make a refillable HME to lower the per unit cost.

great for travel

I use these with my transcend mini CPAP for travel. So far they have worked great they last about a week. I used to for a two-and-a-half week trip and it was fine. So much better than a hauling my big machine with a water tank around.

I use this with travel machine so I don't have to Lug around a humidifier.

I have used this for trips to Hawaii and Britain. I am very satisfied. I am interested to see how it works in a more arid climate like Arizona next fall. The science makes sense so I expect it will be okay.

Worked fine!

I had no problems with the exchanger. It helped me sleep and that's what's most important.

Works very well when I travel

It makes for a compact unit for travel however, I cannot tell when the device is no longer functioning to provide proper moisture.
